Alexandra sees an increase of rape, common assault, and contact crime cases
Alexandra police station has recorded an increases in rape, common assault, and malicious property damage, bucking provincial trends.
Police Minister Senzo Mchunu presented the fourth quarter crime statistics on May 23.
The stats revealed that Alexandra had experienced an increase in reported cases of rape, common assault, and contact crime.

Mchunu stated that the data, covering January to March 2025, showed a notable decline in crime across various categories compared to the same period last year. However, he pointed out that sexual offence cases, including rape and contact sexual crimes, have risen across the country. Although rape cases fell by 0.7% in the Gauteng province, Alexandra recorded an increase of three counts, from 42 to 45 cases compared to the same period in 2024.
The most concerning trend is the surge in common assault. Alexandra ranks first in Gauteng, with a 31.4% increase compared to last year. Malicious damage to property also rose by 16.7% to, while cases of assault GBH saw a slight increase of 2% from 152 cases to 155. Contact-related crimes saw an increase of 15.5%, moving from 103 in the same period in 2024 to 119 in 2025.

Additionally, the statistics revealed that Alexandra recorded a 16.1% increase in reported cases of contact crime, surging from 621 in 2024 to 721 in 2025. Alexandra police station is ranked 20th on the list of the top 30 police stations for reported contact crimes (crimes against persons) in the country. Despite this rise, the station fares slightly better than other police stations in the Johannesburg District, such as Johannesburg Central and Hillbrow.
Twelve of the 17 community reported crimes in Alexandra have seen an increase in the number of reported cases compared to the same period in 2024, two have stabilised, and three have declined.
“We don’t deny that crime levels in the country are high; we are very concerned about it… We confirm that crime cuts across all divides, rural and urban areas, and that is why we are intensifying the fight against crime. We commend and encourage the South African Police Service to fight on and harder. We will win.”
