Gomtown Boyz FC celebrated its players at an awards ceremony in Alexandra on 29 August, recognising those who showed commitment, hard work and dedication throughout the 2025/26 season.

The club competed in several competitions during the season, most notably the Hollywoodbets Regional League, where it finished second on the log.

Delivering his opening remarks, club chairperson Thulani Ndlovu said being a “top dog” is about the courage to keep going when things are difficult, coupled with discipline, commitment, loyalty and belief in oneself and one’s teammates.

“We have seen our players continue to give their best as our coaches continued to guide them. Our administrators worked behind the scenes, and our supporters continued to stand with us. Today, we celebrate all of them,” he said.

Ndlovu said the awards exist to recognise individuals who have gone above and beyond, describing them as a statement of appreciation. “They say, ‘ We saw your effort, sacrifice, commitment, and we thank you,’” he said.

He urged nominees and recipients to remember that an award is not the end of a journey, but encouragement to keep striving. The club’s ambition, he added, extends beyond winning matches; he said the club wants to develop talent, create opportunities, and build a team strong enough to compete in the third division and beyond.

The club got so close to promotion

Technical director Thabo Malebjoe acknowledged a tough season, but noted how close the club came to reaching the ABC Motsepe League and, by extension, the Premier Soccer League.

“We were supposed to win the league because we did everything to our strength; however, at the end of the day, one had to be the winner,” he said. He said the team advanced to the playoffs for second place, where it fell short in the final.

Several players were celebrated for their commitment and hard work. Babylon Sonjica was named Most Improved Player, while Celomuso Kunene received the Club Person of the Year award. Simphiwe Ndlovu took the Young Player of the Season honour, and the Golden Glove went to Xolani Manka.

The Golden Boot, for the club’s leading goal scorer, went to Luyolo Mzalamba. Lebogang Dolo was named both Midfielder and Player of the Season, while the Chairman’s Award went jointly to Muzikayifani Maduna and Malebjoe.

Speaking after the presentations, club captain Dolo admitted the season had not gone as they hoped, with the club having set its sights on the title. Looking ahead to 2026/27, he called for greater commitment from the squad. “It is up to us if we want this… let us be serious. In this season, let us be dedicated,” he said.
