Sandton crime stats show ups and downs

Despite some declines in specific crime categories, overall serious crimes at Sandton saw a marginal uptick in the fourth quarter of the 2024-2025 financial year, according to official figures announced by Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu.

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu announced the crime statistics for the fourth quarter of 2024/2025 financial year on May 23, and they indicate, for Sandton, a modest overall rise in serious crimes, with some categories experiencing notable changes.

Between January and March 2024, community-reported serious crimes numbered 1 530, which increased slightly to 1 536 in the same period of 2025, a 0.4% rise. While this indicates relative stability, specific crime types showed more significant shifts.

Common robbery incidents surged by 30%, from 60 cases in January to March 2024, to 78 in January to March 2025, marking an increase of 18 counts.

Carjacking also saw an uptick, rising from 26 to 34 cases, a growth of 8 incidents. Kidnappings increased marginally by 1 case, from 30 to 31.

Conversely, some crimes demonstrated improvement. The theft of motor vehicles and motorcycles decreased by 5%, dropping from 60 to 57 cases. Similarly, theft out of or from motor vehicles declined slightly by 4%, from 124 to 119 cases.

Other serious crimes showed a slight increase, moving from 856 to 863 cases which is 0.8% increase, while commercial crimes rose from 457 to 471 incidents, a 3.1% increase.

Shoplifting, however, experienced a significant decline of 33.6%, decreasing from 110 to 73 cases. Driving under the influence of alcohol also decreased by 4.3%, from 94 to 90 incidents.

Overall, these statistics suggest that, while some sectors of crime have been curtailed, others, particularly violent crimes like robbery and carjacking, are showing upward trends.
