Johannesburg Water launches smart controllers to enhance water security

As part of its Smart City vision, Johannesburg Water is installing innovative smart pressure controllers to reduce leaks, conserve water, and ensure a sustainable supply for residents.

Johannesburg Water is making strides towards becoming a smarter, more sustainable city by deploying advanced smart controllers for pressure management across its water network. This initiative is a key component of the water conservation and water demand management programme, designed to reduce water losses, control demand, and guarantee a reliable water supply for Johannesburg residents.

The project involves retrofitting smart controllers on the outlets of 28 high-consumption reservoirs and towers, as well as critical network pressure reducing valves (PRVs) in areas with high water demand. Senior Manager Logan Munsamy explained: “These controllers will manage pressure more effectively, reducing the incidence of pipe bursts and leaks, which directly lowers water losses. By lowering system pressures, we can also decrease minimum night flows, further conserving water.”

Since the start of the 2023/24 financial year, 15 units have been installed, with an additional 12 units added by April 2025. The city plans to install a total of 100 smart controllers by June 2025. In addition, Johannesburg Water is deploying 125 noise loggers, automated leak detection sensors attached to critical pipelines, to detect underground leaks early, allowing maintenance teams to carry out targeted repairs and prevent water wastage.

These initiatives aim to address physical losses caused by high pressures and ageing infrastructure, ensuring a more sustainable and resilient water supply for Johannesburg. Stay informed about these developments and support water conservation efforts as the city strives to build a smarter, more efficient water network for the future.
