Gomora United crowned champions after 2–1 victory over The Bees

Gomora United FC claims the ABC Motsepe League Championship title in a match against The Bees.

Gomora United FC emerged victorious in the ABC Motsepe League national playoffs, claiming the championship title after a 2–1 final win over The Bees at Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville, Pretoria, on July 7.

Gomora’s win against the The Bees follows a string of victories against their national playoff opponents. First, a decisive 3–0 win in their opening match against African Warriors at the Giant Stadium in Soshanguve, Pretoria, and second, their narrow 1–0 victory over Midlands Wanderers in the semi-finals at the Lucas Moripe Stadium

In the finals, Gomora dominated the game, securing an early lead after Xola Mosiea scored an opening goal in under 21 minutes. This was followed by Moses Mokasi’s goal in the 51st minute, pushing Gomora to a commanding 2–0 lead.

In the dying minutes of the game Lebogang Lingela beat Gomora’s goal keeper Sdingo Nxumalo with a stunning flying side volley shot, increasing The Bees’ prospects of scoring an equaliser, but with only a few minutes left before the final whistle, The Bees ran out time, and Gomora held firm to claim their victory.

Three teams in the ABC Motsepe League – Gomora, The Bees, and third place finishers Midlands Wanderers – secured promotion to the second tier of SA football. Gomora also received the R1.25m, the trophy, and the gold medals, whereas The Bees pocket R600 000 and the silver medals.

Although Gomora won the finals of the national playoffs, it finished second in the provincial league. It was, however, soon elevated to first place, after Highlands Park, which was on top of the table with over 80 points, suffered a 62-point deduction and were relegated for fielding Franklin Ogbonna, who was using fraudulent visa documents.
