Armsta rallies behind Gomora United before stunning 3–0 Win
Gomora United FC went into their first ABC Motsepe League National playoffs knowing that they had the support of Armsta and the Alexandra community.
Gomora United FC kicked off their ABC Motsepe League national playoffs on a high note, securing a commanding 3–0 win against African Warriors at the Giant Stadium in Soshanguve, Pretoria, on July 2.
Ahead of the match, the Alexandra, Randburg, Midrand, and Sandton Taxi Association (Armsta) hosted a send-off meeting for the team at their Wynberg offices. Armsta’s vice secretary, Thabo Lebuso, expressed pride in the team’s achievements and emphasised its importance to the Alexandra community. He also emphasised the significance of the send-off meeting.

“It was important for the players to motivate them to fight on the field, to show that we are there outside the field. So, they must fight very hard to get results… So, the send-off was all about the motivation to show the team as a whole that Armsta is there to support them,” he said.

Lebuso said football had long been a unifying force in South Africa, and Gomora United’s stellar performance in the national playoffs had the potential to unite the community of Alexandra. He shared that although Alexandra had legends such as Shoes Moshoeu, Brian Baloyi, and Lebogang Manyama, it did not have a team in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
Gomora United’s path to the playoffs was accelerated after league leaders Highlands Park were docked 62 points for fielding a Nigerian player using fraudulent visa documents, pushing Gomora to the top of the table.
Lebuso stressed that beyond football pride, promotion to the Motsepe Foundation Championship could bring a real economic impact. “Soccer pays very well at the highest level. I think it is their wish as well to have a better life because some of them come from advantaged backgrounds.” He added that if the team went far, that would mean job creation, business opportunities around matches, and inspiration for youth in the township.
As Gomora United FC continues its playoff journey, Armsta believes the team has made the most of their first game, which is the most important game.
