Alexandra Field Band seeks votes for national recognition

After years of nurturing young musicians and serving as a platform for creative expression, Alexandra Field Band is now looking forward to expanding its reach beyond the Alexandra community, and it needs your vote.

After nearly two decades of serving Alexandra residents with their rhythmic sound, Alexandra Field Band could be on the verge of going national and even international. The youth brass band is one of the top five bands in 5FM’s Best Brass Roots Band competition, and is rallying local support to get more votes and push their sound beyond the Alexandra community.

The band’s programme officer and manager, Twala Phumzile, believes that the support of Alexandra citizens might allow its young members to showcase their talent to the world. “We felt that this would be a great platform for our youth to get good exposure, even worldwide, as you will never know who will be listening. We believe that there is a lot of talent that deserves exposure.”

The band has nurtured young musicians, dancers, and performers while offering young people a haven from the pressures of social challenges in Alexandra. “The Field band foundation gives the youth of Alexandra a place of safety, there is no time to be involved in drugs or alcohol abuse and many other distractions that they can face.”

The band has become more than just music, it a platform of youth development and creative expression in the community. Ever since its inception in 2007, it has had notable achievements that serve as a testament of the talent its youth has. Phumzile said in 2024 alone, the band won six trophies, including Best Visual/Show design performance, second-place in best brass performance, best run project, and best dance performance.

Phumzile explained that getting votes from Alexandra citizens to win the 5FM competition could give its young members an opportunity to gain national recognition and sponsorship opportunities.

She calls on the community to rally behind the band once more by voting for them. She said supporters could also visit the band at Skeen Primary on Mondays and Tuesdays between 14:30 and 16:30 or at Ekukhanyisweni Primary on Wednesdays and Thursdays, between 14:30 and 17:00, to explore volunteer opportunities.
