Acting mayor highlights Alexandra’s issue of inequality on Mandela Day

At a Mandela Day event at Altrec Sports Centre, Acting Mayor Jack Sekwaila spoke about Alexandra’s history, and also put a spotlight on the enduring inequalities facing its residents.

Acting Mayor of Johannesburg Jack Sekwaila addressed a gathering of Alexandra’s youth at the Altrec Sports Centre, using Mandela Day to spotlight the township’s stark inequalities. This was at an event hosted by the Guardian Angel Wildlife and Marine Trust (GAWMT), the South African National Service Institute (SANSI), and the South African National Defence Force (SANDF).

The event drew scores of young people together to honour Nelson Mandela’s legacy through youth empowerment, environmental action, and civic pride.

During his brief address, Sekwaila acknowledged the role of Alexandra in the liberation struggle, noting that it served as a frontline community in the struggle. He shared its proud history as Johannesburg’s first township, and Nelson Mandela’s former home, but, despite its significance, he highlighted the glaring challenges that remain. “It is here that the contradictions of our society are most visible. The wealth of the few alongside the poverty of many. Mandela fought, not only against apartheid, but for a society where the fruits of our labour are shared by all.”

He further emphasised that Mandela Day should serve as a call to action for those who believe in justice, equality, and the redistribution of wealth and power. His sentiments about inequality speak to the events’ theme: It’s Still in our Hands to Combat Poverty and Inequality.

Sekwaila described Alexandra as: The house of liberation, where many freedom fighters began their political journeys. “Mandela’s legacy is a beacon for those committed to the radical transformation of South Africa.”

The acting mayor’s speech highlighted Alexandra’s unyielding spirit and historical significance in the face of economic divides. His words served as a rallying cry to tackle the enduring issue of inequality head-on, and inspired youth to carry forward Mandela’s legacy through active citizenship.
