Help prevent sewerage blockages

Blocked sewers pose significant health and safety risks. JW emphasises the importance of proper waste disposal and proactive maintenance.

Blocked sewers are a serious concern for residents of Johannesburg, not only disrupting daily life, but also creating significant health hazards. Each month, Johannesburg Water (JW) clears approximately 4 500 sewerage blockages across the city, highlighting the prevalence of this issue and the importance of community co-operation in preventing it.

Sewerage blockages can lead to water contamination, which poses risks to public health, and can cause flooding and infrastructure damage, resulting in costly repairs and inconvenience for residents. To safeguard the city’s infrastructure and maintain a clean environment, JW urges residents to dispose of waste responsibly and avoid actions that contribute to blockages.

Common causes of sewerage blockages include flushing inappropriate items such as wet wipes, sanitary products, towels, and tampons. Even products labelled as ‘flushable’ can cause pipes to clog. Additionally, pouring fats, oils, and food scraps down the drain is a major contributor, as these substances solidify inside pipes, obstructing flow and leading to blockages.

One of the many broken sewerage pipes in the hostel compound spews human waste.

Residents are encouraged to report any sewerage issues promptly by calling 011 688 1699 or emailing: fault@jwater.co.za. Reporting blockages early helps prevent further damage and ensures swift intervention.

Preventing sewerage blockages requires community effort and awareness. Proper waste disposal is simple but effective. Dispose of sanitary items and fats in bins, avoid flushing anything other than toilet paper, and be mindful of what goes down the drain. By working together, Johannesburg residents can help maintain a healthy, safe, and efficient sewerage system, ensuring the city’s infrastructure remains resilient and capable of providing essential services.

JW remains committed to providing reliable water services and safeguarding the city’s infrastructure, reminding all residents that keeping drains clear and disposing of waste responsibly is vital for a healthy and sustainable Johannesburg.
