Key information for Gauteng school admissions in 2026

Important deadlines and requirements you need to be aware of to place your child in school in 2026.

If you’re looking to enrol your child in Grade 1 or Grade 8 for 2026, mark your calendar. The application window opens on July 24, and closes on August 29. To avoid last-minute stress, it’s best to submit your application early via the official website: Gdeadmissions.gov.za.

Only certified and valid copies of specific documents will be accepted. For homeowners, a municipal account not older than three months in your name, showing your full residential address, is needed. Renters must submit multiple documents: a municipal account in the landlord’s name, a signed lease agreement (which can be older than three months, but must still be current), a recent rental payment receipt, and a statement in your name confirming your address. All documents must be recent, valid, and match the details you entered online.

It’s important to understand that proof of address is the most vital document for your application. Schools will verify your details, and any discrepancies could affect your chances. Due to past issues with fake address documents, some schools have introduced home visits to verify applicants’ addresses. The Gauteng Department of Education fully supports this approach to ensure fairness and prevent dishonest applications.

Alongside proof of address, you’ll need to upload or submit certified copies of your ID or passport, your child’s birth certificate, or relevant permit, proof of your work address, and, for Grade 8 applicants, the latest Grade 7 school report. For Grade 1, a clinic card or immunisation record is required. Make sure to upload your documents within seven days of applying. They must be valid and match the information you’ve entered. Submitting fake or incorrect documents will lead to your application being disqualified.

The department will send SMS reminders if your documents are missing or late, so keep an eye on your phone.

To avoid missing out, start gathering your paperwork now and aim to submit early. Applying on time gives you the best chance of securing a place and reduces the last-minute panic.
