Blue Birds draw again in their battle to the top eight

Blue Birds Ladies Academy’s top-eight hopes in the Gauteng Sasol League hang in the balance after a draw with Mito Ladies. With tough tests against Mamelodi Sundowns and Kempton Park looming, can side soar into the safe zone?

Blue Birds Ladies Academy’s quest for a top-eight finish in the Gauteng Sasol League hit another snag after a hard-fought draw against Mito Ladies at Alexandra Stadium on August 9.

The stalemate is now their second consecutive draw after their clash with Nicko Taurus Fa on August 2. The draw has stalled their push for maximum points, hindering them from securing the coveted eighth spot, currently held by University of Johannesburg FC.

Despite lack of a victory, the Blue Birds’ draw against Mito Ladies marks a milestone for them, especially against the backdrop of major loses last season. Blue Birds suffered heavy defeats against Mito Ladies in 2024, 0–4 in March and 0–2 in May. This year’s back-to-back draws against the same opponents signal progress on their side.

The road ahead, however, offers little respite. Blue Birds face daunting fixtures ahead, starting with a clash against league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, on August 16 at Alexandra Stadium. Sundowns, who thrashed Blue Birds 5–0 in April, remain unbeaten with 55 points.

A week later, on August 23, Blue Birds take on third-placed Kempton Park FC. A team with whom they have traded wins, losses, and draws in recent seasons.
Looking at the fixtures, coach Malvin Khumalo spoke of his players as people who understand the road ahead, and what is expected of them. “We started to mature as the season progressed. We had a problem on scoring, but the defence was good. So, we had a lot of draws. Where we were conceding, we were only narrowly conceding – losing by a single goal.”

With Mamelodi Sundowns, Kempton Park, JVW FC, and Hallelujah Zebra Force leading the Blue Birds with significant numbers of points, Blue Birds’ fight to the top eight will be fiercely competitive.
