Region E Men’s Parliament will make men feel recognised

As Alexandra prepares to launch its Region E Men’s Parliament, local voices, like Chris Ndlovu, say the platform could reshape how men are seen in the fight against gender-based violence.

Member of the Alexandra men’s forum Chris Ndlovu believes the upcoming launch of the Region E Men’s Parliament marks a turning point in how men are seen in the fight against gender-based violence (GBV). Speaking after a plenary meeting held at the EMS Be Safe Centre on August 26, Ndlovu said the parliament will offer men a space to be heard, not just as perpetrators, but as victims and individuals facing complex challenges. “Most of the time, when we look at GBV, which is a pandemic in our country, people see us only as perpetrators, not victims. This parliament will give us a chance to voice our concerns and be recognised for the challenges we face.”

For Ndlovu, the initiative is a necessary intervention that addresses the emotional and psychological burdens men carry, often in silence. “We need gatherings like this, where we can discuss a lot of things. It’s important for us to be seen, to be recognised, and to exercise accountability in a constructive way.”

He pointed to mental health as one of the key issues that drives harmful behaviour, noting that the parliament will serve as both a support system and a space for reflection. “When you’re triggered or pushed to act a certain way, you need to know the right way to respond. That’s what we’re learning through these platforms.”

The Region E Men’s Parliament is part of a broader resolution passed at the Braamfontein Men’s Parliament in April, which called for subdistrict parliaments to be formed across Johannesburg.

Charles Mphephu, manager of FAN Champions for Change, said the goal is to create spaces where men can engage openly on the issues they face daily. “We said we are going to launch a subdistrict men’s parliament, so men can come together in their regions and talk about the issues they are facing.”

The parliament is expected to officially launch on September 18. It aims to foster dialogue, accountability, and access to support services for men across Region E.
