Raycon ladies face tough climb in pursuit of top 8 finish

As the end of the season draws close, FC Raycon Ladies is eyeing the eighth positions on the log, but with the remaining fixtures against tough competitors, Raycon’s rise to the top eight will not be easy.

With only a handful of fixtures remaining, FC Raycon Ladies are pushing to end their Sasol League campaign inside the top eight. Currently sitting 12th on the log, the team is eyeing a late surge to secure eighth place before the season wraps up.

Coach Koketso Matsemela admitted the road ahead will be anything but smooth. Raycon is set to go head-to-head with strong contenders, like Diepkloof Ladies and Wits University FC, as well as Springs Home Sweepers, the team that is currently behind Raycon in 13th position.

Matsemela is targeting maximum points from the remaining games, though he acknowledges the challenge. “It will not be easy. We have to ensure that we make the upcoming matches against tough competitors difficult. We want to take points off them.”
He also believes Raycon’s current eight-point gap over Springs Home Sweepers is likely to hold, given the tough opposition Sweepers still have to face. “There is no way that they will secure three wins from the remaining games. They have tough teams to compete against.”

Raycon’s recent 1–1 draw against Hallelujah Zebra Force, on September 13, was a missed opportunity. The team had hoped for the full three points, but had to settle for one. “We had confidence and we wanted to win, more so to improve our position. I think we just got unlucky.” Matsemela reflected. “We did manage to get clear chances from one of our top goal scorers this season, Hope Masimola, but, unfortunately, when it is not your day, it’s just not.”

Despite the talent in the team, Matsemela feels luck has not been on their side this season. “We had good players, but we just ran out of luck. Sometimes, in football, you need luck.”

With just a few matches left, Raycon is now aiming for at least nine points to break into the top eight, however, the task ahead will not be easy. “Our chances of getting into the top eight are not looking good, but we also want to widen the gap between us and the team below. That is just as important right now. We will have to take it one game at a time.”
