Operation Dudula opens a defamation case against EFF

Following the EFF-led march to the Alexandra Police Station to open a case against Operation Dudula, the group says it has filed its own complaint against EFF members who allegedly defamed them online.

Operation Dudula leader Zandile Dabula said the group has opened a case at the Alexandra Police Station against EFF members who defamed them.

This comes shortly after EFF members in Gauteng marched to the same police station a week prior, on September 20, to open a case against the group following the death of Praise Banda, a child the party alleged died after Operation Dudula members denied her mother access to Alexandra Community Health Centre and 8th Avenue Clinic in Alexandra.

In a video released on September 27, Operation Dudula leader Zandile Dabula addressed supporters outside the Alexandra Police Station, responding to the EFF’s announcement that it had opened a case against the group. She denied reports that a case had been filed against them.

Additionally, she said that Operation Dudula had opened a case at the station against those who defamed them.

“We have to make sure that we deal with people who defame us on social media platforms and even on mainstream media,” she said.

This comes on the back of statements made by EFF, referring to the group as nothing more than a ‘criminal gang’ masquerading as a community structure.

“The profiling of patients at clinic gates, demanding IDs and proof of nationality, is unconstitutional, unlawful, and reminiscent of the pass laws of apartheid.”

Additionally, the party’s chairperson in Gauteng, Nkululeko Dunga, said the group was obstructing access to public health facilities for citizens they label as undocumented.

“The reason why we say citizens of this country is because everyone, according to them [Operation Dudula], who comes to these facilities without some form of identification is perceived to be an illegal immigrant,” Dunga noted.

Despite these allegations, Dabula maintained that they are putting South Africans first and will continue doing so.

“Whether you take us to prison or keep de-campaigning us, we will put you [South Africans] first,” she said.
