Union of Jewish Women year-end event features children’s radiant smiles
Joy and gratitude lit up Alexandra Aftercare’s year-end party, as children celebrated with gifts and speeches, and wholesome smiles.
Union of Jewish Women’s (UJW) Alexandra aftercare project manager Vanessa Weltman said they had a heart–full celebration marking the end of 2025.
A year that, for the organisation, has been nothing short of wonderful. The joy of the year-end celebration, held on November 28 in Alexandra, was best encapsulated in the excitement and smiles of children that shone brighter than the festive season fireworks.
Weltman said it was those kinds of smiles, and that excitement and pride, that reminded the organisation why it does what it does.

In the true spirit of Christmas, the children received gifts and demonstrated their gratitude to donors. “The children prepared the most heartfelt speeches to thank our generous donors, danced their hearts out, and proudly received their certificates of achievement, attendance, and kindness.”

She said each child went home with a pair of premium–quality school shoes, made from recycled medical plastic waste, thanks to Shoes for Schools, a Jawitz Properties national community initiative launched in support of My Walk Made with Soul NPO.

They also received goody bags, stationery, and school socks, among other items. In essence, the heartwarming smiles of children were smiles of those already set for the upcoming year, at least in terms of learning materials.

A week earlier, as recipients of the Santa Shoebox Project, UJW Alexandra aftercare children, received boxes filled with stationery, clothing, toys, sweets, and toiletries. Weltman recalled how overwhelmed some children were when they opened their boxes.
For an organisation dedicated to nurturing and providing educational support for children living in underserved communities, the support was well–needed and deeply appreciated.
Now, as Christmas approaches, it will be merry for some children in Alexandra, as they already have gifts in their hands.
