Alexandra man hijacked at gunpoint, suspects demand ransom

The suspects took the car, everything in it, and still went on to demand money from the victim’s family.

A man and his girlfriend were hijacked at gunpoint on Sunday night in Alexandra.

The 36‑year‑old victim, who asked not be named, said the car, a silver Chevrolet Spark, was parked between 7th and 8th Avenue on Florence Mophosho Street around 23:00, when four suspects appeared, one armed with a firearm, and took them out of the car. “They took my girlfriend out. They put me in the back seat, in the middle of two men, and they left with me. They said they wanted money.”

He said the suspects called his sister, demanding ransom. She sent them R2 000. Even after they had received the money, the suspects did not release him immediately. They requested him to call his parents, but he told them that they would not have money as they do not work.

After driving through the dark streets of Alex for some time, including London Road, he said they dropped him off close to the bridge near the cemetery. “There were two phones inside the vehicle, mine and hers. They took them both.”

He said the suspects told him that he would find the vehicle at a stadium in Tembisa, but when he was accompanied there on Monday morning, they did not find anything. “I went this morning and looked around, but could not find anything. I think the suspects are locals here in Alexandra. Maybe they just wanted to mislead me when they spoke about Tembisa.”

He later received an image of the vehicle from an unknown number showing the car parked somewhere in a yard, but the location of the vehicle was not shared. “I don’t know if it is just a person or the same hijackers who sent the view‑once image of the car [on WhatsApp], saying they want R1 000.”

He said he opened a case of hijacking yesterday at Alexandra Police Station.

Alex News reached out to the Alexandra Police Station for comment. An update will be provided once their response is received.
