Ward 116 to target three streets to normalise electricity

With five of the eight streets in Ward 116 already having meters and purchasing electricity, the remaining three are next in line.

City Power’s process of normalising electricity in Ward 116 in Alexandra has gained traction and has, so far, reached the majority of streets in the area.

Of the ward’s eight streets, electricity on five has been normalised, and as residents look forward to 2026, the ward councillor, working together with City Power, will now have to target the remaining three.

“Of the eight streets that we have, we are now left with only three streets that we need to go to, to actually finish off the entire normalisation process,” Ward 116 councillor Adolph Marema said.

His remarks come as the utility continues working to ensure that residents receive improved electricity supply and that the scourge of illegal connections is addressed for the remainder of 2025.

While Alexandra grapples with informal connections, Marema said he did not necessarily refer to the issues in his ward as illegal connections. He explained that his approach had always been to make sure that residents received a meter and could pay for electricity.

“For us to start judging our people who do not pay or are connected illegally, we must normalise. This means to give everybody a meter so that people can buy electricity,” he said.

He added that only then could people raise issues of illegal connections, because everyone would have been given proper access to electricity.

“Only then, we would be able to determine if there are illegal connections or not. If they didn’t give them electricity, [and they have it], it would mean they stole it. And ordinarily, it should be cut off.”

As the end of the year edges closer, Marema said the priority remained to ensure that the remaining households received proper electricity and were enabled to pay for it.
