Run Alex chairperson eyes win in Central Gauteng Athletics elections
Chairperson of Run Alex Athletics Club Mokakatla Masekela is stepping up to contest the upcoming Central Gauteng Athletics quadrennial elections.
Mokakatla Masekela, a well-known personality on the streets and running tracks of Alexandra township, is campaigning for a position in the Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) quadrennial elections, set to take place this Saturday at Germiston Stadium.
His bid stems from years of hands-on involvement at the community level, particularly through his leadership at Run Alex Athletics Club, and ongoing work with local schools, public institutions, and private academies.

Having witnessed the potential of local athletes up close, he is also acutely aware of the systemic challenges and shortcomings that prevent many from reaching their full potential.
“Central Gauteng has talent and passion, but everyone is well aware it needs better co-ordination, accountability, and more development pathways that genuinely support athletes from the ground up.”
Having played a pivotal role in building and defining the character of Run Alex Athletics Club, where he now serves as chairperson, Masekela is ready to expand his impact beyond Alexandra and into the broader provincial athletics structure.

“I have so much respect and gratitude for the previous teams and executives. However, strongly believe this is the right moment to contribute more practically to rebuilding trust and strengthening those systems.”
Masekela is standing for election to roles within the CGA commissions overseeing cross-country, track and field, and road running – a logical progression for someone whose efforts have already reshaped the athletics environment in Alexandra.
When Run Alex Athletics Club was established in 2018, it wasn’t founded on the experience of veteran officials, but rather on a simple conviction: That everyday people could learn, take initiative, and build something substantial together.
Eight years on, that approach has nurtured a capable leader whose vision now extends far beyond township boundaries.
