uMkhonto we Sizwe Party steps in to fix broken desks at Alex High

To ease learning disruptions and bullying at Alex High, MK Party members stepped in to repair broken furniture.

uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK)  party members are not waiting for the government to step up with furniture at Alexandra High School, they are stepping up themselves.

Following weeks of engagements with some schools in Alexandra, the MK Party finally made a decision to address some of the ailing infrastructure issues at Alexandra High School.

“There were chairs and tables that were broken at Alex High,” MK Party acting secretary general in Alexandra Zone 13 Siziwe Zwane said. “We felt that, since funds are coming slowly, and we don’t get assistance, we might as well take this amongst ourselves and do it.”

Zwane explained that the visit to schools was intended to give them a better understanding of their grievances. One of the challenges they encountered at Alex High, as revealed by media reports, is the lack of furniture.

The issue of infrastructure in Alex schools is particularly acute. Just yesterday, media reports indicated that the student body, Congress of South African Students (Cosas), disrupted learning at a number of high schools in Alex, including Alex High, over infrastructure woes.

These challenges not only affect learners’ outcomes, but, according to Zwane, also worsen bullying as learners become prone to fighting over chairs and desks.

Although Zwane said their plan to address infrastructure challenges at the school dates as far back as January 9, the initiative serves as a direct response to the current crisis plaguing the school.

Zwane explained that they intend to repair all 250 tables by Saturday, having fixed 55 already, for use by matric learners at the school.
