Three girls injured in Alexandra hit and run

A hit and run incident in Alexandra left three teenage girls injured on Saturday after a white bakkie allegedly veered onto the sidewalk while trying to overtake another vehicle.

Three teenage girls were injured after being run over by a white bakkie in Alexandra on Saturday.

The driver allegedly fled the scene immediately after the incident, but was chased by community members until he abandoned the vehicle at 14th Avenue and London Road.

The girls, aged between 16 and 17, received medical attention, with two being treated at a local clinic and discharged in the early hours of Sunday. Their friend remains hospitalised.

Her mother, Lentswe Ntshegang, confirmed that she is in a critical condition. “We are trusting God, and are hopeful that she will recover as she is still under medical care.”

Reports from witnesses indicate that the driver turned onto the sidewalk while attempting to overtake another vehicle. It was at that moment that he struck the three girls.

Ntshegang confirmed that a case has been opened at the Alexandra Police Station. She believes the driver was aware he was at fault, which is why he fled the scene. “With the condition my daughter is in, it shows he was reckless.” She added that tyre marks were left on her daughter’s tracksuit pants.

The incident has divided the community. While some residents expressed anger, stressing that reckless driving continues to put pedestrians at risk in Alexandra, others took to social media to argue that community members themselves often fail to respect vehicles and road rules.

This debate has struck a painful chord, especially for Ntshegang, who feels that shifting the blame onto the children comes across as insensitive, especially since eye witnesses confirmed that the children were not to be blame for the accident.
