Bicycles return to Alex streets
Bicycles are rolling back into the spotlight as Climate Riders and Siya Shova revive a forgotten tradition in Alexandra.
Cycling is making a comeback as a powerful response to climate change, and a way to reconnect communities.
Climate Riders, in partnership with Siya Shova, are leading the charge to restore a tradition that once defined the streets of Alexandra. According to Dineo Sithole, a member of Climate Riders, the initiative is not just for fun, it’s an act of environmental responsibility. “The whole point why we started this thing, is because we want to change the climate issues in the country, and the environment.” Cycling, she added, offers a number of benefits, including personal health and collective environmental impact.

She noted that, by reducing reliance on cars, the cycling tours cut down on carbon emissions and noise pollution. Despite the benefits of cycling, the once vibrant cycling tradition in Alex has been neglected. “Alex used to have cycling tours, but people do not take cycling seriously. They all want to use cars, and cars are bad for the environment because they release gases that pollute the air.”
The recent revival tour, held on March 28, was designed to reintroduce cycling as a valued practice, and also offer young people an alternative to destructive behaviours often associated with street life. “Most of the time we have children coming to our offices and saying they want to do something. So, to keep the children off the streets, we introduce them to cycling, which also saves our environment.”

Beyond the environmental mission, the cycling culture is also about joy, energy, and connection. Sithole believes cycling has the power to unite communities. “Cycling will bring communities together. It is fun and energetic. All the children have energy, and when they come together, they enjoy themselves, they get to know each other, and they build bonds that are unbreakable.”

The revival tour, which started on 7th Avenue and went to Alex Mall, underscored the role cycling plays in strengthening the community ties, addressing environmental issues, and promoting health.
Zandile Morule, who is also at the forefront of the cycling movement, said the intention is to host more cycling-related events in Alexandra. At the moment, they are still working to source more bikes. She has also expressed enthusiasm to work with other organisations in Alexandra. Their recent event received positive feedback, and requests for collaboration from other organisations, highlighting that the cycling culture, though forgotten by some, is still valued by others.
