Blue Birds rises from the ashes

It took less than 24 hours for the Blue Birds to redeem themselves after suffering a humiliating 4-0 loss to Wits.

The agony of a crushing 0-4 defeat to Wits University FC on May 23 could have shattered morale and invited another heavy loss. Instead, for the Blue Birds Ladies, that pain became the catalyst for an inspiring turnaround.

Less than 24 hours later, they rose from the ashes to deliver a commanding 3-1 victory over a formidable University of Johannesburg FC side at the Alex Safe Hub on May 24.

Entering Sunday’s clash, coach Malvin Khumalo admitted that the Blue Birds carried the heavy psychological burden of their bruising Saturday result.

UJ, meanwhile, arrived as confident contenders in the Sasol Women’s League, fresh from ruthless displays including a 4-0 win against Young Achievers FC and an 8-2 win against FC Raycon Ladies.

Few observers gave the home team much hope, especially when UJ opened the scoring, exposing lingering fears from the Wits loss. “We started a little bit slower because yesterday we had a terrible game. We lost 0–4 to Wits, and that was still in the back of their minds. You could see they were a bit afraid to make a mistake,” said Khumalo.

The first half reflected a team haunted by recent failure, tentative passing, hesitation in challenges, and a visible lack of confidence. Yet Khumalo understood the root issue wasn’t purely tactical. “We tried to work more on the mentality than the tactical approach because it was about getting the mindset right.”

During halftime, Khumalo had to encourage his side to put the Wits defeat behind them and recognise they could match UJ’s quality in a 50/50 contest.

That pain-driven resolve exploded after the break. Thabisile Khumalo unleashed a stellar long-range shot outside the penalty area to grab a crucial equaliser. The goal didn’t just level the score; it rattled UJ and shattered their composure.

Within moments of the restart, Tshiamo Segwatle capitalised on regained possession to slot home the second, swinging the momentum decisively in Blue Birds’ favour. The visitors, who had dominated early encounters this season, suddenly looked unsettled as the home side’s intensity rose.

Vangile Mnguni delivered the final blow with a third goal, sealing the 3-1 triumph and confirming the comeback’s success. Khumalo praised the character his side showed.

“I think in the 10 minutes after the second half, I could see the character we were showing. I am proud of how we responded, especially coming from behind.”
