Alexandra learner gang-raped in school toilet: Teens in court

Following a rape at a school, police are looking for a third suspect, while two teens are expected to apply for bail when they next appear in their local magistrate’s court.

A horror ordeal for a 14-year-old girl has resulted in the arrest of two teenage boys after she was gang-raped in a school toilet in Alexandra, Gauteng, on Thursday.

Two boys were arrested by local police the next day, and a third is sought, according to the victim’s family.

Police

The family, who is known to the publication but cannot be named due to legal reasons, said she arrived home late from school on Thursday. When asked why she was late, she revealed the shocking news.

A case was immediately opened with the police and it led to the arrests.

The duo appeared in the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court yesterday and they were remanded in custody. They will next appear in the same court on February 20 to apply for bail.

Department stays mum

When Alex News was reliably informed about the incident, a WhatsApp message was sent to Gauteng Department of Education spokesperson Steve Mabona. He read the message but has yet to officially confirm receipt of it or to acknowledge that he would revert to the newspaper.

Attempts to obtain comment from the department continue.

High-risk school

In October, the Gauteng Department of Social Development took its ‘Ke Moja Fridays’ to the school, which it described as a high-risk school ravaged by many social ills, such as rampant substance abuse, teenage pregnancy, gambling, bullying, and gangsterism.

‘Ke Moja Fridays’ is a preventative educational programme that seeks to address the scourge of substance abuse in schools and targets communities such as LGBTQIA+, artists and musicians, and tavern owners. It is run by Social Development and partners – the Department of Education, the African Youth Development Fund and NPOs in the area. High-risk schools are identified to benefit from various Ke Moja programmes.
