Convicted murderer of schoolboy’s sentence postponed yet again

Peter Mphulo Magolego will know how many years he will spend behind bars on July 5 for the fatal shooting of Sandtonview High School learner Thando Khumalo.

The sentencing of convicted murderer and Alex socialite Peter Mphulo Magolego, the man who shot dead Sandtonview High School learner Thando Khumalo on August 28, 2022, has been postponed yet again to July 5.

Alexandra Regional Court heard that the convict’s social worker was yet to finalise the report and that the defence lawyer was also unavailable as he had another matter in Polokwane.

The magistrate then ordered that the case be postponed to July 5, for sentencing to allow the social worker time to finalise the report. The other social worker’s report for Thando’s Masebe and Khumalo families has been finalised and handed to the court.
This is the third time that convicted murderer Magolego, who expressed his remorsefulness over the murder when he appeared previously in court, has had his sentencing date postponed.

The magistrate said the current postponement is to allow the social worker to present the report to the court as a pre-sentence presentation that will guide the court to arrive at an appropriate sentence for the accused.
Magolego had been scheduled for sentencing on April 30, in the same court, but this had to be postponed following an application from his attorney to be granted the right to engage the services of a social worker in mitigation of sentence.

The court granted the application but ordered that this also apply to the Khumalo and the Masebe families in aggravation of sentence for the accused. The late Thando was Sipho Masebe’s adopted son as instructed by Masebe’s late sister just before she died.
The magistrate ordered that two social workers be appointed, one for Magolego and the other for the two families of the late Thando.

In his plea of guilty in court, Magolego said he accepted full responsibility for the murder of the schoolboy and ‘I don’t want to waste the court’s time as I feel remorseful for what I did’.
This case has dragged on for three years as the South Gauteng High Court had to decide whether it could be heard in its jurisdiction or referred back to the Alexandra Regional Court for trial.

The South Gauteng High Court finally ruled that the case be heard in the Alex Regional Court and the case was placed back on the roll. Magolego was back in court on April 16, and he pleaded guilty to murder after being charged.

Thando (20) was fatally shot at close range after a chase following a road rage incident on August 28, 2022. The Grade 11 learner was returning to his home in Tsutsumani Village in the early morning hours from a night out with six of his friends when he met his tragic death on the corner of 12th Avenue and Hofmeyr Street.
