Pan Africa Mall reopens, bigger and better, after July 2021 lootings
The notorious July 2021 uprisings and looting spree saw Pan Africa Mall razed to the ground. Now it's back, bigger and better, and son of the founder of the mall, Tebogo Mogashoa, is begging the community to protect it.
Talis Property Fund chairperson Tebogo Mogashoa has made a passionate plea to Alexandra residents to safeguard the newly rebuilt Pan Africa Mall.
Speaking at the grand opening of the mall after it was razed to the ground during the July 2021 uprisings which led to widespread looting, Mogashoa, founder and chairperson of the Tallis Group, said the structure will allow the family to maintain a strong influence over Talis Property Fund’s direction and vision, ensuring that their commitment to empowering the Alexandra community is always front and centre in their decisions.
Describing the mall as a beacon of the desired development of the township, Mogashoa said the mall holds dearly the values of development and transformation of the lives of the people of this iconic township.

“We all know what happened in July 2021. All that is now behind us, but it forms part of our history as a community. I just hope we are not going to see that history repeating itself.

“As investors deeply committed to Alexandra, Talis Property Fund sees this expansion as more than just retail growth – it’s an investment in the social fabric and economic future of the area.
“I would like, therefore, to appeal to our community to safeguard this mall. It is not just a place where they spend their hard-earned money, it is also a beacon of success and development of the township which I, and my partners, Redefine Properties, clubbed together to rebuild from scratch,” said Mogashoa, himself a son of Alexandra during the days when his parents lived in the township.
Redefine Properties CEO Andrew König said it was important for the community of Alexandra to rid itself of all the criminal elements that walk the streets to ensure the mall project continues to grow and uplift the socio-economic status of the residents of the township and its future generations.

König paid tribute to the two taxi associations in Alexandra, ATA, and Armsta, in trying to defend the mall against hordes of people seeking to help themselves to whatever was in the stores that formed the mall.
