Refilwe Pieterse sees brighter days ahead for Alexandra

In an inspiring reflection on the challenges and resilience of the Alexandra community in 2024, Refilwe Pieterse emphasises the importance of investing in the next generation and fostering unity to overcome adversity.

As 2024 comes to a close, Refilwe Pieterse Foundation founder Refilwe Pieterse reflects on a year marked by both struggle and strength within the Alexandra community.

Pieterse said the year was tough but it was also a year of encouragement, bravery, love and most importantly the year of giving.

Pieterse underscored the harsh economic realities faced by many households in Alexandra, where she observed that often only one or two out of five families have a steady income.

Amid this struggle, however, she has witnessed inspiring acts of generosity and solidarity, as individuals become breadwinners not just for their own families but also extend support to neighbours facing hardships.

“I’ve seen people go to sleep hungry, yet others step up to help,” she said, expressing excitement about the compassion that has emerged even in difficult times.

Looking ahead to 2025, Pieterse is filled with hope. “I wish for a better year for employment opportunities. We have seen young people rising above all odds, some starting their businesses from scratch.”

Pieterse encourages every parent to invest in children. “Let’s invest more in our children. If you discover that a child has a particular talent, support them in pursuing it. This encouragement doesn’t have to come only from biological parents, anyone who can help should lend a hand.”

Her call to action includes the need for increased access to educational resources, particularly libraries. “I would like to say big up to the organisations running libraries and those about to open.
Pieterse advocates for an abundance of libraries over taverns, envisioning a future where children awaken to a world filled with educational opportunities.

In her eyes, the foundation of a prosperous community lies in the cultivation of children’s potential, through love, resources, and time.

She expresses pride in the unity demonstrated by the residents of Alexandra. “No matter how tough 2024 was, we need to applaud ourselves for being the united township.”

Pieterse envisions 2025 as a transformative year filled with positivity, detailing her hopes for reduced substance abuse among youth, cleaner streets, and more supportive local businesses. “I see our streets shining with artwork painted with love.”

In closing, Pieterse reiterated a powerful message of optimism and community spirit, asserting, “2025 will be Alexandra’s year of prosperity.”
