Sassa delays June payments over undisclosed income

Thousands of Sassa beneficiaries are in for a surprise this June as the agency cracks down on undisclosed income.

The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has announced delays in social grant payments for about 210 000 beneficiaries ahead of the June 2025 payout.

This comes after the agency, working with registered credit bureaus, flagged some recipients for possibly receiving income they did not disclose when applying for grants.

According to South Africa’s Social Assistance Act, grant applicants must disclose any sources of income when they apply, and must inform Sassa if their financial situation changes later on. Failing to do so can lead to penalties, including suspension or cancellation of grants.

Those affected will have to visit their nearest Sassa office within 30 days from the announcement to undergo a review of their grants.

Should they not comply, their payments may be suspended and if they continue to ignore the process, their grants could be stopped entirely.

Sassa says this step aims to ensure beneficiaries update their details.

“This initiative is aimed at ensuring that beneficiaries confirm any changes in their financial circumstances, and for them to update their personal details. It also seeks to address potential inclusion errors in the current social security system,” said the agency in a statement.

The agency also urges beneficiaries to declare any additional income or bank accounts they have not yet reported.

Those using older, green, bar-coded ID books are also encouraged to replace them with the new smart ID cards to lower the risk of fraud.
