Sinothando Day Care Centre uses Mandela Day to promote environmental responsibility
In a township grappling with litter and illegal dumping, Sinothando Day Care Centre used Mandela Day to involve children in a public space clean-up – planting values of responsibility where they’re needed most.
As Alexandra public spaces remain at risk of deteriorating because of excessive littering and environmental neglect, Sinothando Day Care Centre is determined to address the issue by fostering environmental responsibility among it’s learners.
In their commemoration of Mandela Day on July 18, they took the children to a local park for their 67 minutes of service in honour of Mandela’s legacy.
The centre’s Thandi Luruli highlighted the importance of the initiative, emphasising that involving children in clean-up efforts fosters the lifelong values of environmental responsibility and community pride – values that could serve as a solution for Alexandra’s illegal dumping issue. “We believe that when children actively participate in keeping their surroundings clean, they begin to understand their role in caring for the world around them. This early awareness is key to shifting generational attitudes, moving from passive observation to active contribution in protecting public spaces.”

For Sinothando, the clean-up efforts were not a once-off event. Luruli said they see great value in making environmental care a regular part of their early childhood development curriculum. “Simple, age-appropriate activities, like tidying up play areas, sorting recyclables, and planting in small gardens, help build both fine motor skills and social awareness.” She noted that they are working to embed these types of activities into their programmes so that care for the environment becomes a natural and consistent part of the learning experience.
According to Luruli, honouring Mandela’s legacy means living out the spirit of ubuntu and teaching children that they are all responsible for one another and for the well-being of the community. “When children take the lead, even in small acts of service, it sends a powerful message: Change begins with each of us, no matter how small.”
Luruli expressed pride in guiding children to understand that service, kindness, and leadership are not only values to be admired, but actions to be practiced.
