Pageant queen’s quest to uplift young people in Alexandra

Not all young people in Alexandra are defeated by the township's persistent challenges. Some, like Thando Motha, the reigning queen of Miss Alexandra, are on a mission to inspire youth to dream beyond their circumstances.

Thando Motha, born and bred in Alexandra, knows the township’s struggles all too well. The lack of resources, guidance, and the erosion of self-belief – she has seen it all, especially among the youth.

But as the reigning queen of Miss Alexandra, she isn’t one to sit back and watch as young people become increasingly despondent. She has been waiting, like an eagle poised to soar, for the chance to spark change, and it has come through this pageant. “Being the reigning queen of Alexandra gives me more than just a title; it gives me a platform, and a voice, that reaches the hearts of young people who may feel overlooked or hopeless.

“It allows me to be a visible example that dreams are valid, even in a community where opportunities often feel out of reach.”

Through her platform as Miss Alexandra, her mentorship at Sipho Sethu Art Project, and her entrepreneurial venture, Thandoooo’s Beauty Blushes, Motha is on a quest to empower young people. “I strive to uplift, educate, and instil a sense of purpose in the next generation. My advocacy is not just about giving back; it is about building up, because, when the youth of Alexandra is empowered, the entire community rises with them.”

Despite growing up in a township where poverty, limited access, and dwindling hope looms large, Motha has become a tireless advocate for possibility, encouraging young people to look and dream beyond their surroundings. She believes that sometimes, all it takes is one person to believe in a young dreamer to change their trajectory. “I aim to be that person,” she said.

Whether she is speaking at schools, mentoring at community programmes, or leading local initiatives, Motha uses her platform to bring about change. “I use this crown to plant seeds of hope, confidence, and purpose in every young soul I encounter.”
