The Alex Wolves Rugby Club has finalised its U15 squad for the Legends Cup, a pivotal tournament in the South African Rugby Legends Association’s (SARLA) Vuka Rugby Programme.

Club manager Elias Mpengu confirmed the squad is ready to compete, with aspirations of advancing the young players to the Hollywood Foundation Iqhawe Week.
The Vuka Rugby Programme, a SARLA and South African Rugby Union (SARU) initiative, nurtures rugby in disadvantaged communities. The initiative saw U15–U19 players from Alexandra’s schools participate in weekly matches for months leading up to August.
Mpengu said coaches monitored the matches to select players for the Legends Cup, a two-day tournament where township teams compete for regional honours. Mpengu explained: “Each and every game of Vuka, which they play every Friday, we were selecting. So, we were finalising our squad today for the Legends Cup because they are going to play next week.”
The Friday match at Marlboro Gardens between Kwabhekilanga and Marlboro schools sealed the Wolves’ squad, which will now train as a unified team. “We want all those we have selected to practice at the same place, not as individuals from separate schools, but as a team.”
Mpengu said the Legends Cup is a stepping stone to the Iqhawe Week, a national U15 tournament for non-traditional rugby schools. He said the Legends Cup will give the players, from various townships, an opportunity to showcase their sportsmanship and potential, with the goal of being selected to form part of the provincial squad. “From all those townships competing next week, they will select players to represent Gauteng province.”For Alexandra, the Legends Cup is a chance to shine. With the squad finalised, the Wolves are poised to fly the Alexandra flag high.
