Girl cricketers’ months of training to be tested at tournament
The East Bank High School girls’ cricket team will soon participate in the much-anticipated schools’ tournament, showcasing their skills and talents after months of training with no actual games.
The East Bank High School girls’ cricket team is preparing to showcase their skills at the upcoming school’s tournament, following months of intensive training without match play.
Coach Bonginkosi Mabizela says the team has used the winter break to sharpen their technique and build confidence, despite not having had any competitive fixtures. “So far, they have been training, since schools closed. We used that time to train in the mornings. Some of the players are also on trial for new teams.”

While Mabizela said the tournament fixtures are yet to be confirmed, he remains optimistic that his team is well equipped to take on tough opponents. “We are still waiting for more information, but they’re ready. They have worked hard and will not lose the skills they have gained.”
The coach also hinted at a major shift in team composition, with new players expected to join the starting line-up, believing the tournament will give the newcomers an opportunity to showcase their skills. “It’s going to be 50/50. The number of experienced players will match the number of newcomers. I want to give young players a chance to play.”
Back in May, Mabizela had expressed his desire and goal of developing his players’ skills and boosting their confidence. “Our plan is to make them better.”
Now, over two months later, he is as confident as ever that they will show up and bring their best foot forward. “I do not think that they will ever lose the skills they gained so far. Those skills are not easy to lose.”
The tournament marks a crucial test for the team, whose preparation has been long, but largely off the pitch. For East Bank’s young cricketers, it’s finally time to turn practice into performance.
Mabizela expressed full confidence in their potential and skill. “They will definitely do their best.”
