Alex Cricket Club cultivates raw cricket talent

Alex Cricket Club dedicates itself to offering aspiring cricket stars opportunities to develop into provincial and national stars.

In the pulsating core of Eastbank at the Altrek Sports Complex, there is a club that is dedicated to developing raw cricket talent. A club that is driven by the relentless desire to turn first-time cricketers into provincial and national assets.

Established in 1987, Alex Cricket Club was intended to accommodate local cricket lovers, but it has grown into a remarkable club that nurtures the talent of aspiring cricket players. It has also become the go-to place for senior players who wish to sharpen their game.

Alex Cricket Club administrator and treasurer Martin Rathogwa said the club offers opportunities for both male and female players, from mini-cricket for budding youngsters, to competitive senior teams.

“The male senior team is currently playing in the second-highest league in Johannesburg, called the CGL Premier B, and the ladies are playing in the third stream, called the President A,” he remarked.

The club not only aims to win matches, but also to shape future stars.

Under the leadership of coach Thapelo Moche, the club has seen a surge in player development. It currently has players in major teams like the Lions and Titans, and some in the Eastern Cape, and KwaZulu-Natal.

Rathogwa said the club’s home ground, in Eastbank Oval at Altrek, is open to all. Whether you are trying out cricket for the first time or looking to enhance your skills, the club’s co-ordinator is available from Monday to Friday for anyone interested in joining.

Looking ahead, the club is gearing up for an exciting finale as it draws near the end of its season. Rathogwa says they will face Jeppe Cricket Club in their last home game on April 6. It’s a match that promises fierce competition and a celebration of the club’s progress.
