Sandton SPCA outreach event brings pet care to Alexandra

Sandton SPCA delivers free pet sterilisation, grooming, and education through a community outreach event at Tsutsumani First Park in Alexandra.

The Sandton SPCA made an impact on the lives of animals and pet owners in Alexandra through their community outreach event at Tsutsumani First Park on August 13. The event, which offered free pet sterilisation, grooming, and an educational workshop, drew a large number of residents, highlighting the community’s growing need for accessible animal care.

The initiative reflects the Sandton SPCA’s enduring commitment to combating animal cruelty and neglect, issues that usually plague townships like Alexandra, often because of limited resources and awareness.

“We are here to help the community of Alexandra,” said SPCA inspector manager Xolane Mncube, overseeing operations. “We are taking the animals for sterilisation to prevent unwanted animals, giving food, toys, bathing, and grooming them… Free of charge.”

The outreach extended beyond immediate relief, with the Sandton SPCA educating local pet owners about proper feeding, handling, and the critical importance of sterilisation in curbing the stray animal population – a persistent concern in townships with limited access to such information. They also provided citizens with information on how to report animal cruelty cases.

For those unable to reach the park, the SPCA fanned out across Alexandra’s streets, delivering education and pet food directly to homes, and conducting door-to-door inspections.

As Mncube explained, the hands-on approach aligns with their broader mission, developed over years of service. “We prevent animal cruelty in different levels by educating the community, and this is what we are doing in the Alexandra community.”

Speaking about the significance of grooming animals, Mncube emphasised that it plays an imperative role in preventing ticks and fleas, which are common afflictions that can lead to health issues for dogs and cats. This is especially true in Alexandra, where some residents have limited knowledge about flea or tick preventives.

Nicole Felix, representing Hot Dogs Grooming, expressed pride in their collaboration, bathing over 40 dogs with the Sandton SPCA. “Today, we’re giving back to the Alexandra community by helping the wonderful Sandton SPCA to groom the local pets.”

Mncube confirmed that the outreach had surpassed its targets. “We’ve gone above our goal of 15 animals. We have reached 25 animals that will be sterilised at the Sandton SPCA clinic.” He shared that it was a milestone worthy of a celebration.

This effort builds on the Sandton SPCA’s longstanding work in Alexandra, where pet ownership often coexists with limited veterinary access and pet care education. Additionally, it serves as a vital step towards a more informed community where every pet’s life matters.

Mncube noted that he is proud of his dedicated team, as well as volunteers that assisted.
