KT Molefe denied bail in murder case
Murder-accused Katiso ‘KT’ Molefe was denied bail by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court.
The Alexandra Magistrates’ Court denied bail to Sandton businessman Katiso ‘KT’ Molefe on Wednesday (August 20).
Molefe is charged with the November 2022 murders of Oupa ‘DJ Sumbody’ Sefoka, his bodyguards Sibusiso Mokoena and Sandile Myeza, and the March 2022 murder of Hector ‘DJ Vintos’ Buthelezi.
Magistrate Renier Boshoff, after a week of arguments, ruled against bail. “There’s also the statutory framework requiring that the accused must, on a balance of probabilities, show the existence of exceptional circumstances to permit his release on bail,” Boshoff said, citing constitutional precedent for schedule six offences.
Boshoff found that Molefe failed to show exceptional circumstances. “Considering all the relevant facts and circumstances before the court, the court makes the value judgment and finds that the applicant failed to [provide] exceptional circumstances justifying his release on bail,” he said. He noted concerns linking Molefe to the crimes and his influence and capabilities, stating, “His bail application is accordingly refused.”
Molefe faces murder charges with co-accused Michael Pule Tau, Tiego Floyd Mabusela, and Musa Kekana, alleged hitmen in the Woodmead shooting that killed DJ Sumbody and his bodyguards. The four are also charged with DJ Vintos’ murder in Orlando East. Molefe’s co-accused did not apply for bail.

During Molefe’s bail hearing on August 6, the State prosecutor, Khethokwakhe Ngubane, presented an affidavit from the investigating officer opposing Molefe’s release on bail, calling Molefe a ‘dangerous individual with no regard for human life’. Cellphone records allegedly show communication between Tau and Mabusela after the murders, with WhatsApp messages suggesting ‘K’, whom the State claimed to be Molefe, arranged payments for the hit.

Ngubane also noted that Molefe is a flight risk, and witnesses could be in danger if he were released.
Advocate Michael Hellens SC, Molefe’s counsel, countered the State’s argument with an affidavit in which Molefe denied being a flight risk, interfering with investigations, or posing a threat to witnesses or evidence.
During the final arguments on August 14, Hellens cited a Pretoria High Court ruling granting Molefe R100 000 bail in April 2024 for a separate murder case involving Armand Swart, arguing that it should guide Boshoff’s decision.
Boshoff noted that although bail was granted in the High Court regarding Swart’s case, the court is of the respectful opinion that a lot has changed since then. “The current counts are indeed of a serious nature. Very importantly, the evidential link between the four accused persons in this case appears to have increased.”
Boshoff said Molefe will be kept in custody until September 18, the provisional date for indictment.
