Intruder allegedly found in room with deceased woman

A daughter walked into her mother’s home only to find her body lying on the floor and an intruder allegedly hiding behind the door.

The Meyers family is devastated following the discovery of Chantel Meyers’ body, under troubling circumstances, in her home at an informal settlement in Alexandra.

In the early hours of October 6, her daughter, Lebogang Meyers, returned from the toilet to find the front door suspiciously open. Upon entering, she found her mother lying unresponsive and unclothed on the living room floor, and, allegedly, a man hiding behind the door wrapped in a blanket. “Something told me to look behind the door, and I only saw his shoes. He had wrapped himself with a blanket. I got out of the house and told the woman I was walking with that there was a person [inside the house].”

When they called out to the man, he allegedly responded by asking Lebogang to re-enter the house. When he eventually got out and was confronted by the community. He reportedly gave conflicting explanations about why he was in the house. According to Lebogang, he first claimed he was looking for her friend, and later said he had found the door open, saw Chantel on the floor, and entered to check her pulse.

The man was kept at the scene until law enforcement arrived and took him into custody. At the time of the incident, Lebogang’s two children were reportedly asleep in a nearby bedroom, along with Chantel’s partner.

Chantel had been discharged from hospital just hours earlier, on October 5, following treatment for a chronic illness that left her increasingly vulnerable and unable to walk without assistance. “She was talking to herself and seeing things that other people could not see,” Lebogang said.

The family now faces additional hardship. Claudine Meyers, a close family member, said they are unable to proceed with funeral arrangements due to the absence of Chantel’s identity documentation. “We did not have her ID number, and now we can’t bury her because policies require the names and documents of the deceased. She was not receiving any grant or formal support.

The family said it is in need of any form of support, and open to any contribution the community can make towards the burial expenses. To support the family, reach out to Claudine Meyers on 066 209 7570.
