Hyde Park High learners honour teacher who shapes lives in and outside the classroom
This teacher month, Hyde Park High learners are raising their voices for Siyabulela Mokebe. More than a maths teacher, he is a mentor, motivator, and life shaper.
As South Africa celebrates teacher month, learners from Hyde Park High School are honouring Siyabulela Mokebe, maths and science teacher, founder of Tamanna for Change, and author of The Science of Learning, for his impact, both inside and beyond the classroom.
Mokebe, who grew up in Alexandra, is a mathematics and science teacher who also serves as the school’s math club co-ordinator and is responsible for math and science Olympiads.

His learners nominated him for the Minister’s Special Award last month, describing him as a life-shaping educator whose belief in their potential transformed their academic journeys and fostered their personal growth.
They describe him as patient, caring, and deeply committed to helping them realise their full potential. Known for calling out marks, not to shame, but to motivate, he is credited with changing how many learners view mathematics and themselves.
Mapule Molepo, a former learner, shared how Mokebe’s belief in her transformed her academic journey. “The reason I am nominating Mr Mokebe is because of the positive impact he has made. He always believed in me, encouraging and pushing me beyond measure.”

She recalled walking into his class to find the board filled with mathematical problems, an approach that she said, sharpened her skills, not only for tests, but for final examinations as well.
She noted how his help went beyond mathematics, extending to other subjects, including English, and Afrikaans. She added that he also pushed her out of her comfort zone, helping develop her confidence.
Other learners, like Zoe Maota, shared how he makes maths feel easy. “His lessons aren’t just about numbers, they are about discipline, resilience, and dreaming bigger. He believes in us even when we doubt ourselves. That’s why I believe he’s the best candidate for Best Teacher.”
Reflecting on the nomination, Mokebe said that these are moments that make one feel appreciated, especially in a profession as difficult as teaching. “This just made me realise the magnitude of the impact I have on my learners.
“The message is touching, but also a call to be a more ethical and transformative leader, understanding the impact of my actions, and how they can either build hope, or destroy a generation, without [me] even being aware.”
