Cancer awareness event delivers vital health services to Alex families

Rain didn’t stop Alexandra residents from showing up in numbers for a cancer awareness event intended to offer them free screenings and a reminder to prioritise health through lifestyle choices at KwaDlozi’s Carwash.

Alexandra residents braved the rain to attend the aerobics cancer awareness event held at KwaDlozi’s Carwash in Alexandra on Saturday. The event, organised by Sbongile ‘Sbosh’ Tshabalala from Sbosh Body Core, brought together medical professionals and residents for a day of free health screenings and education.

Some of the medical staff from the 18th Avenue Clinic were present on-site, offering services that included pap smears, prostate cancer checks, HIV testing, pregnancy tests, family planning consultations, blood pressure monitoring, and child immunisations. The event was designed to promote early detection and encourage healthier living across all age groups.

“The purpose of organising this event is to remind people how precious it is to take care of our bodies by exercising regularly and eating healthy food,” said Tshabalala. “And by healthy food, I mean vegetables, spinach, cabbage, beans, brown bread, more proteins, less starch, sugar, and fast food,” Tshabalala added. This would help them live long and age well.

She said the campaign also aimed to deal with chronic illnesses such as obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure. She noted that despite the unfavourable weather conditions, community members, both young and old, came out in numbers to attend the event.

Tshabalala noted that the weekend event offered some parents who are often busy during the week an opportunity to bring their children to get the services on offer. “We have got parents who are working during the week and they do not have time to take their children to the clinics for immunisations, so it was easier for them to bring their children to the venue for the activities of the day and health care services,” she explained.

She extended gratitude to partners, including Dlozi and Sbusiso Radebe for hosting the event, as well as Freedom Supermarket, 15th Avenue Bakery, Eastbank Clinic, Emalahleni, Run Alex, and The Dip Fitness Club for their support. She added that the next event will be announced soon.
