JMPD turns three suspected motorbike thieves over to Alexandra Police Station

Three suspects were arrested in Alexandra after being found with a suspected stolen motorbike.

Three suspects were handed over to the Alexandra Police Station after the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) arrested them for possession of a suspected stolen motorbike.

Station Commander Brigadier Vusimuzi Ngubane said the suspects were arrested in Alexandra on Thursday. “They stole that motorbike. It was stripped and hidden inside a parcel,” Ngubane told the community broadcaster Alex FM.

He described the arrest as a breakthrough in their fight against motorbike hijackings and motor vehicle theft. “We will get more information now about all these hijackings of motorbikes and theft of motor vehicles.”

Ngubane noted that this type of crime is a growing problem in the community, but police are still uncertain about where suspects take the motorbikes after they’ve stolen them.

Detective Colonel Daniel Raletlhaka appealed to the community for assistance in tackling hijackings and robberies, urging residents to come forward with information. “They are the ones terrorising Alexandra. I do not know why they are in Alexandra, because they are taking the cars from Alexandra, not from anywhere else.”

Previously, officers expressed concern about the community’s reluctance to share information with them. However, Raletlhaka noted that he recently received intel, but missed a suspect by minutes. “He was supposed to be the first one [to be apprehended], but unfortunately he ran away.”

He said for now, the police will focus on dealing with the three suspects currently in custody.
