Don’t let thieves steal your Black Friday wins

Shoppers urged to stay vigilant as criminals target crowded malls and parking lots this Black Friday.

Black Friday fever has hit South Africa’s malls and stores, with massive discounts pulling in thousands of bargain hunters, but while the deals are hot, so are the opportunities for criminals – from cellphone snatchers and pickpockets to card fraudsters and car break-ins.

Police and private security companies report a sharp spike in opportunistic crime every year during the Black Friday weekend. With crowds providing perfect cover, thieves are on the prowl for distracted shoppers carrying new purchases, cash, or expensive gadgets.

While you’re hunting discounts, stay one step ahead of the crooks with these straightforward rules:

  • Keep your head up and scan around you often, crowds are perfect cover for thieves.
  • Hold kids tight and remember exactly what they’re wearing in case you get split up.
  • Carry almost no cash. Pay by card or phone inside the store, never at an ATM in the parking lot.
  • Stop walking the second you look at your phone – that’s when the snatch happens.
  • Handbags zipped and across your body, phone in a front pocket or secure sling, nothing dangling loose.
  • Just bought a big-ticket item? Watch for anyone tailing you to your car.
  • Skip the sardine-packed stores if you can – early morning or late evening is calmer and safer.
  • Lock your car, check the doors clicked, and never leave boxes or bags on the seats.

Security experts also warn against overloading yourself with shopping bags, which can make you slower and less aware of what’s happening around you.

With a bit of common sense and vigilance, you can grab the bargains and get home safely. Enjoy the sales – but keep your eyes open.
