Police hunt for suspect in death of woman in Alex

Police are still searching for the suspect behind the brutal killing of a woman on 3rd Ruth Street in Alexandra.

Police in Alexandra have launched a manhunt, after a woman in her late 20s was brutally murdered on 3rd Ruth Street in the early hours of November 27.

According to Alexandra Police Station Commander Brigadier Vusimuzi Ngubane, the incident occurred at approximately 02:00.

At the time, the victim and her sister were returning home from work when an unknown assailant reportedly ambushed the pair, opening fire and shooting the victim multiple times. The attacker then stabbed her multiple times while she lay on the ground, before fleeing the scene.

The victim’s sister, who was walking alongside her, was unharmed.

Police have since opened a case of murder and are appealing to the community for any information that could assist in tracking down the suspect.
Ngubane confirmed that investigators are aware of reports linking the crime to a previous killing at the same spot.

The victim’s late partner, referred to as her ‘baby daddy’, was shot and killed at the same location last year.

However, Ngubane cautioned against drawing premature conclusions, noting that Alexandra recorded a high number of murder cases in 2024, and that no direct link has yet been established between the two incidents.

The motive for the killing remains under investigation.

“At the moment, the suspect is unknown, but our officers are following up on leads,” Ngubane said.

He added that while the information received so far has not led to an arrest, police value the co-operation of residents who continue to come forward.

“We appreciate the information that people are bringing, because when we receive it, we investigate and follow up.”
