Alexandra gears up for #IRunWithThemba New Year’s Eve challenge

Alexandra residents are set to end 2025 on a high note as they take on #IRunWithThemba’s annual run on December 31 at Kwabhekilanga Sports Ground.

As the end of the year draws near, some residents intend to cap off 2025 with as much energy as they started it, by taking on the final challenge of the year.

The 3rd annual New Year’s Eve run, hosted under #IRunWithThemba, is set to start at Kwabhekilanga Sports Ground on December 31, giving residents an opportunity to end the year on a high note.

“They say how you end the year sets the tone for how you start the next one. So, let us end 2025 with power, community and a serious challenge,” said organiser, Themba Bila.

For him, the event is a chance for people to conquer what he describes as the final miles of the year.

Unlike the previous all-black Breakfast Fun Run events, which covered a distance of 5km, the year-end run turns up the heat by challenging participants to don all-white outfits and take on double the distance. For the daring, it offers even tougher options such as the 21km and 31km routes.

Bila describes the last 31km as a beast meant for those brave enough to take on 31 clicks for the 31st day.

But whichever distance participants choose, Bila said they should make it their year-end long run.

“I wish everyone that will be running a great year ahead. Let’s go to the new year with the spirit of togetherness and keep on checking on each other. We need one another to get through the year.”

The run, set to start at 05:30 in the morning, is expected to be as tough as nails, testing the endurance and mental strength of every participant. Bila said the event will close off with a celebration.

“After we crush the miles, we [will] celebrate our community.”

He urged participants to bring a plate of snacks or drinks to share with their running family at the finish line.

Bila emphasised that IRunWithThemba is not just about running, but about bringing people together and supporting each other in Alexandra.
