New year, new hit as Alex artist plans to drop Yey Lapho
Sibusiso Shongwe’s new track celebrates Alexandrans’ hard work, dreams, and community spirit.
Alexandra residents will have a new and vibrant song titled Yey Lapho to jam to next year, a track that is not only a party starter but also a celebration of the community’s relentless pursuit of dreams and goals.
The mastermind behind Yey Lapho, Sibusiso Shongwe, says the song, set to drop in January, is all about uplifting people in Alexandra and beyond. While it is a danceable track perfect for social gatherings with family, friends, and perhaps a splash of liquid courage, it also carries a deeper resonance for individuals facing difficult times.

Beyond its jovial nature, the song, according to Shongwe, assures those who might be going through a hard phase in life that they are seen and their efforts recognised.
“The song is an acknowledgement of all the hard-working people in Alexandra, it means I see what you are doing. I notice you. By doing this, I want to ensure that people do not lose heart or motivation,” he said.
“As the track says, ‘Beautiful Alexandrans, hey there. Everyone who wakes up early in the morning, hey there,’ meaning I acknowledge what they are doing.”
More than just a hype song, Shongwe explained that the track delivers a powerful message of encouragement to those pressing toward their goals and dreams.

Having been part of a movement that created a platform for men to gather and talk about their struggles, he emphasised that the message was especially important for men, who often feel their hard work goes unnoticed.
“It was inspired by the #NoExcuseMovement that we are doing with Charles Mphephu’s Father A Nation. Since I started that programme, it has been an eye-opener. So, I just wanted to acknowledge people who are pushing, more especially men, because most of the time they work hard and they feel their hard work goes unnoticed.”
Although he feels the message will resonate more with men, he said the song itself is gender-neutral and can be enjoyed by anyone.
