Skechers Wednesday offers runners free weekly training in preparation for future races
Themba Bila’s free Wednesday running sessions at Kwabhekilanga Sports Ground are preparing Alexandra runners for the bigger races ahead.
Themba Bila, organiser of #IRunWithThemba, is providing free weekly running sessions every Wednesday to help beginners and community members improve their fitness and prepare for upcoming events.
The sessions, known as Skechers Wednesday, take place at Kwabhekilanga Sports Ground at 17:00, where participants receive an hour of training, beginning with warm-ups.
Bila said, the training focused on track work, and that he pushes participants to complete 5km in approximately 30 minutes. With this, he aims to build the strength and stamina needed for street running. “I am squeezing them to finish that 5km. Some don’t even cover the 5km in 30 minutes, but they have to, at least, cover 3km.”
These Wednesday sessions are preparing runners for the monthly breakfast fun run, held on the last Saturday of each month. The next one is scheduled for February 28. Bila explained that the 5km street route takes participants beyond the track environment, to help them adapt to road conditions. “That is how they get used to the street, because the street and the track are different. We are trying to combine all these things together on a Wednesday.”

He said the breakfast fun run is free, and participants are asked to wear black clothing. The event includes a post-run breakfast and aims to create a welcoming atmosphere for all fitness levels. Furthermore, he confirmed that the weekly training also supports preparation for the Alex 10K, set for next month.

Bila’s group has been invited to participate, and plans to lead the bus to a time under one-hour and 50 minutes. “We are going to be running together, singing and joyous here in Alex.”
He views running as an important part of life, and encourages more people to get involved. “We are living in an era where running is a lifestyle. If you not running, where are you? If you are not with us in the breakfast fun run, where are you? We are bringing the vibe to you. People should come.”
