Mhlaba FC will have to fight hard to keep their winning streak alive and maintain their position near the summit of the Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association (ANLFA) Promotional League.
After a strong start to the 2026 season, the Alexandra side has already proven its dominance in the matches played so far. Their 2–0 victory over Gauteng FC, on January 17, gave them a crucial opening to the new year. With 15 points collected, Mhlaba now sits second on the log, just behind their historic rivals and current leaders, Alex Royal Tigers FC, who have consistently been a thorn in their side in previous seasons.

Despite last season’s rocky start, the club clawed its way into the league’s top five by the end, establishing itself as a force to be reckoned with. This year, their early momenum has already set them apart.

“So far, so good, compared to last season,” coach Ndabezinhle Mhlaba said. “Back then, by our sixth game, I think we were sitting at number 14 on the table.”

Even with limited training and fitness challenges following the festive break, the team’s resilience carried them through. Mhlaba’s players were able to create numerous opportunities, although they struggled to convert some of them.

The coach admitted he had hoped for more goals. “In the first 30 minutes, I was expecting more, but we missed a lot of chances. It gave them power to fight back in the second half.” Still, Mhlaba’s tactical adjustments, which may become a hallmark of their campaign, gave a 2–0 victory against Gauteng FC.

While it may be too early for the team to celebrate, Mhlaba FC’s powerful start has undoubtedly given them a fighting chance to dethrone the Tigers and secure the top position. With more fixtures ahead, Mhlaba’s determination and tactical edge could define the season.
