IrunWithThemba and Siga Culinary turn breakfast fun run into a family affair

IrunWithThemba’s 5km fitness challenge has swiftly grown into a Saturday tradition where families, friends, and runners of all ages unite to conquer Alexandra’s hills.

No one except those outside the ranks of Themba Bila’s running club can deny that IrunWithThemba’s breakfast fun runs have become more than just races, but a family affair.

The recent 5km Breakfast Fun Run, hosted by IrunWithThemba in partnership with Siga Culinary on Saturday, brought together scores of Alexandra residents to lace up, hit the tracks, and share in a spirit that was as much about togetherness as it was about fitness.

Shoki Lentsoane, a participant who embraces every opportunity to lead an active lifestyle, said the run has become central to her health routine. “I see it as something beneficial for my fitness and health. And I am always encouraging everyone to join the movement because it is a healthy way of living,” she explained.

For other participants like Mmatsela Mashiane, the event was about more than exercise.

She described the atmosphere on the road as one of joy and solidarity. “It is nice on the road, we all sing, and we support each other. We become united, and as though we are one big family,” she said.

What truly puts the cherry on top of the long, yet enjoyable 5km fun run is the breakfast that follows at Siga Culinary. After conquering Alexandra’s hills, runners finally get to sit down together and enjoy each other’s company.

Lentsoane, who covered the 5km with her daughter, reflected on the family aspect of the event, noting that she is fortunate to have a family that is as interested in the fun run as she is.

“When I introduced them to this healthy lifestyle, I found that they also enjoy it. That is why it is so nice, and we don’t only participate in this one; whenever we get invited to such events, we always go.”

Coach Nkululeko Mthimkulu of IrunWithThemba highlighted the inclusive nature of the run, pointing out that it welcomes participants of all ages and abilities.

“This is all about family. You bring the young ones. We walk, and some run. So, you can walk the 5km distance. Everyone is enabled to conquer the course. No one is left behind,” he said.

Mthimkulu also urged the wider community to get involved in the movement. “We meet every Wednesday afternoon at Kwabhekilanga Sports Grounds, and on the last Saturday of each month for the Breakfast Fun Run.”
