Runners conquer tough course to get crowned Alex 10k champions

Maxed Elite’s Elvis Tau and Team Vitality’s Langutani Khumalo rewrote their Alex 10k histories with record-breaking runs.

While thousands of runners crossed the finish line of the gruelling Alex 10k with smiles of accomplishment and medals, the spotlight shone brightest on those who pushed beyond limits to claim victory in the men’s and women’s elite categories.

Elvis Tau, of Maxed Elite Athletics Club, and Langutani Khumalo, of Team Vitality, both walked away with R2 000 in prize money after delivering stellar performances that showed their determination to beat the course like seasoned athletes.

An Alex-based winner, Tau went into the race with a clear intention to redeem himself after finishing third last year.

“I wanted to take it this year, because this is a local race, and I also wanted to support the team since I stay here in Alexandra.”

Despite preparing for other competitions, Tau felt compelled to honour the community event. His effort paid off, as he shaved a minute off last his time from last year, clocking 00:31:00 to secure first place. He outpaced strong contenders Lesetja Papo and Givemore Madzinganyama, who finished second and third respectively.

“The preparation was different compared to last year. Last year I ran under 32 minutes, and this year I ran 31. That shows that the preparation was better.”

On the women’s side, Khumalo’s triumph was also inspiring. Having finished fifth last year with a time of 00:47:00, she returned determined to rewrite her story. This year she managed to beat her previous record by a minute, and that was enough to set her up for Saturday’s victory in the women’s race.

Speaking after the race, Khumalo said she did not train specifically for the Alex 10k.

The race happened to align with her Comrades Marathon training programme, and her improved performance highlighted her growing strength and consistency. “You always want to do better in the races you participate in. So, next year I am hoping to get a better time.”
