Climate Riders and Siya Shova revive Alexandra’s cycling culture

Climate Riders and Siya Shova are reintroducing cycling as both a climate-conscious solution and a community-building tradition.

Climate Riders and Siya Shova are bringing the community together to revive the forgotten yet once vibrant cycling culture in Alexandra through cycling tours.

Far more than just a recreational activity, Dineo Sithole, a member of Climate Riders, said the initiative is closely aligned with their mission to confront climate change, restore Alexandra’s cycling culture, and unite communities through the simple act of riding a bicycle.

She noted that the tour was born out of a desire to address pressing environmental concerns.

“The whole point we started this thing is because we want to change the climate issues in the country, and the environment,” she said.

She emphasised that cycling is not only a personal health benefit but also a collective environmental solution as it reduces carbon emissions and noise pollution.

Sithole said cycling tours were once a familiar sight in Alexandra, but over time, cars became the dominant mode of transport.

“Alex used to have cycling tours, but people do not take cycling seriously. They all want to use cars, and cars are bad for the environment because they release gases that pollute the air.”

It is this history that inspired the recent event, which organisers called a revival tour.

The aim was to reintroduce cycling as a valued practice in the township, while offering young people an alternative to street life.

“Most of the time, we have children coming to our offices and saying they want to do something. So, to keep the children off the streets, we introduce them to cycling, which also saves our environment,” Sithole explained.

Beyond its environmental benefits, cycling is also seen as a social catalyst. Sithole said the activity fosters joy and connection among participants.

“Cycling will bring communities together. It is fun and energetic.

All the children have energy, and when they come together, they enjoy themselves, they get to know each other, and they build unbreakable bonds.”
