Rapper finds his true self under the spotlight

Although he is calm and collected offstage, Alex-based rap artist Luke Starring is a commanding force under the spotlight.

Luke Starring might be calm offstage, but the moment the lights hit and the crowd begins to roar, something switches.
He describes it as an alter ego that takes over, making him command the stage as if he owns it. “One thing about me, when I get on stage, I am not this calm. It’s like I have an alter ego. Everything switches off. That is what drives me. I love performing more than recording.”

That alter ego has become the defining force of his career, especially in how he keeps the crowd entertained and immersed in the moment. For more than a decade in Alexandra’s rap scene, Starring has built a reputation, not just for his heartfelt lyricism, but for the way he commands a crowd. He insists his performances are not simply recitals of songs, but transformations.

Like any other artist, he admits to feeling nerves before stepping onto the stage, but once he does, the hesitation and pressure disappear, and he dominates. Over the course of his career, Starring has performed at numerous shows across various stages, yet one performance still replays in his mind as if it happened yesterday. He was at The Hub Reunion Fellas Picnic, set to perform after South African rapper Nadia Nakai. At the time, Nakai had just featured on Gemini Major’s popular hit Ragga Ragga. “Nadia came before me and performed Ragga Ragga, and the crowd was on fire. I started feeling the pressure. What am I going to do? I got on that stage and gave it my all. When I got off, people were lined up to congratulate me for what I had done.”

He broke into freestyles and crowd sing-alongs with tracks like Starring and Progress. When fans lined up afterward to congratulate him, it confirmed his belief that the stage is where he truly belongs. “When I get on stage, I feel so much in control. That is where I am me, and I feel it is only me versus myself.”

That stage presence has been amplified by his latest project, Fantastic Four, released in July 2025. The EP is short, just four tracks, but Starring says that was intentional. “There is a type of artist that needs to give people time to consume the art, instead of bombarding them with another project.”

The EP’s success has given him fresh material to bring to the stage. It features Kumnandi ,featuring Nuff & Mos, Ntofo Lyf, with Tshepo Howza Mosese, which quickly climbed the Alex FM charts, Samayethu, featuring Supreme Shaman and Suup Zulu, and Top Thokozile, a love song that paints a picture of Starring’s vision of an ideal partner. “Fantastic Four is doing pretty well, and I am happy with its progress.”

Beyond music, Starring has built a clothing brand, LS Clothing, which began in 2016 with caps and hoodies for fans and has since grown into a full clothing line. “It started as merchandise for shows, but now it is a business that can compete out there.”

Starring is already working on a new full-length project expected to drop later this year.
