Collective action needed to stop child abuse

The South African government has strongly condemned all forms of violence, abuse, and exploitation against children, and is calling for urgent collective action to protect the most vulnerable in society.

Recent incidents of child abuse, assault, and abduction are a stark reminder that more must be done by all sectors of society to ensure children are safe at all times.

Those who harm children will be held fully accountable and face the harshest consequences of the law.

Protecting children is a shared responsibility. Communities must work together with the police, Community Policing Forums, and other law enforcement agencies to prevent and combat child abuse.

Section 28 of the constitution enshrines every child’s right to safety, care, and dignity, and these rights must be upheld without exception. Adults must listen to children, believe them, and take decisive action to protect them from all forms of harm.

If you suspect a child is being harmed, do not remain silent – silence enables abuse and robs children of their future.

Report any concerns immediately to the South African Police Service Crime Stop line on 08600 10111 or through the MySAPS App.
