According to the participants, the event met the expectations of athletes, coaches, and supporters alike. Hundreds of runners, from seasoned competitors to enthusiastic newcomers, gathered to tackle Alexandra’s demanding terrain. The mix of steep climbs and rolling descents provided both challenge and excitement, setting the perfect tone for CGA’s 2026 season.

Rodney Jones, of Randburg Harriers, praised the course for its consistency and difficulty. “I have enjoyed cross country for many years, and the undulated nature of this terrain really tests you.” Despite his busy racing schedule, which included multiple events in a short period of time, Jones admitted the Alexandra course was a fresh and demanding experience.
Nhlanhla Vilakazi, competing in the sub-veteran U35 category, highlighted the importance of building momentum early in the season. “The excitement is there, though it’s just the beginning of the leagues.
What I need is the momentum for the season.” He added that his focus was on collecting points to qualify for the CGA championships.

For development clubs, the event was equally rewarding. Katlehong Athletics Club coach Lwandise Mbhele emphasised the consistency and drive required to succeed in cross country. “It needs your consistency, your drive for running, because you must overcome any obstacle.”
He also underscored the role athletics plays in shaping young lives. “We are a development club that always encourages children to take both education and athletics seriously.”

Mbhele pointed to inspiring success stories, including a 14-year-old athlete competing at the national level and another who earned a scholarship through athletics. “We are in a society where our circumstances are not favourable. As development coaches, we need to make sure that we take those children out of those social problems.”
He also noted that the CGA XC league 1 opener in Alexandra met his expectations, showcasing not only the thrill of competition but also the resilience and promise of Gauteng’s running community.
